It’s a town of two halves, with South Hillingdon having a fresher, urban feel and North Hillingdon more refined, being flanked by the leafy suburbs of Ickenham, Ruislip and Northwood. What does unite the town is green open, space in the shape of parks, golf courses and public facilities – a delightful surprise in a London borough.
Hillingdon character
Originally included in the market town of Uxbridge, Hillingdon is now a suburb of its own right, also giving its name to the London Borough in which it resides. Sandwiched in between Uxbridge and Hayes, Hillingdon is where people are educated (Brunel University) and where people get better (Hillingdon Hospital). Two redeeming local landmarks include St John the Baptist Church and Hillingdon Court – a Grade II listed mansion now part of the ACS Hillingdon International School.
Transport in Hillingdon
Everyone loves the Underground in Hillingdon – so much so that the station won ‘Underground Station of the Year’ in 1994. From here you can ride the Metropolitan and Piccadilly lines, and pick up the U2 bus service outside, which takes you to Brunel University. If you’re travelling by car, you’ll no doubt use the A40 to connect to the M25, M4 and M40.
Property in Hillingdon
Families flock to Hillingdon as there’s a concentration of good schools for all ages. Most, however, want to be a short walk from the school gates, so competition for properties can be high. Sweetcroft Lane, Hercies Road, Squirrels Close and Croft Close are much-requested, with large detached and semi-detached properties, where a game of football in the garden is more than possible. Hercies Road is also a hotspot for apartments for sale in Hillingdon – and these make great entry level homes and downsizing properties. North Hillingdon is a micro neighbourhood in the town, and ever popular are Court Drive and Constantine Place – the latter an exclusive gated development off Vine Lane.
Living in Hillingdon
Hillingdon people like to be active. Come rain or shine, there are always people in Hillingdon Court Park; it’s a green oasis offering play areas, football pitches, tennis courts, conservation areas, woodland, formal gardens and a bowling green. Prefer your greens with bunkers? Head to Hillingdon Golf Club and if you favour a bat over a club, Hillingdon Manor Cricket Club is always on the scout for new players. Hillingdon Athletics Club and Hillingdon Sports & Leisure Complex (on the Uxbridge border and complete with open-air lido) keep the momentum going.
