Ickenham is very much West London commuter belt territory, with its own Tube station, but it has wonderful qualities of a village. There is a village hall – known to hold barn dances and ferret racing – a village pond and a community festival that knits the neighbourhood together.

Ickenham was originally divided into four manors and although united today, there is still evidence of the old divisions. Swakeleys Estate is one of those – a 17th century Jacobean mansion house with 25 acres - and Ickenham Hall is another, surviving as part of the Compass Theatre. As far as landmarks go, Ickenham has one of the most unusual. The Grade II listed Ickenham pump – dating back to 1865 and most ornamental in appearance – is protected by an equally interesting shelter.

For overground rail services, take the short walk (around 13 minutes) to West Ruislip station, for peak-time journeys of 22 minutes to Marylebone via Northolt Park.
